Good morning and happy Monday, Charleston.

This weekend was peak Charleston: oyster roasts, great events, and that perfect “winter sunshine + patio weather” combo. If you got out and about, I hope it was a fun one - and if you’re feeling the Monday reset, I’ve got you covered.

Here’s what’s happening around town this week:

Just Opened / New in Town

🍩 Duck Donuts (Mt Pleasant)

The franchise just opened its new location this past Saturday right on Houston Northcutt Blvd. Every donut is made fresh, warm, and customized when you order, and there are more unique flavors on the menu than you can imagine. Check out the menu and more info here.

🍕 Ok Donna (Downtown, Wagener Terrace)

Ok Donna is a new “Italian-ish” neighborhood hangout spot where you can come in and grab a beer and a slice of pizza for $5, or get dressed and have a cocktail for a nice night out. It just opened this past month, but locals are already buzzing about it and loving the atmosphere. Including their website here for more details.

🌮 Cielo Mexican Kitchen + Tequila (Nexton / Summerville)

Cielo opened in the past month and it’s bringing flavors of Mexico, with a modern twist of Latin infusions to the Nexton community. Some of my favorite items on the menu are the Birria Bombs and the Mexican Sushi. Here is the full menu.

🍣 Lee Marcus Food Group

Lee Marcus Food Group is operating KYN, an omakase (multiple course sushi experience), out of Wine Shop Sullivan’s Island. Unfortunately, it’s all booked out through the rest of the month. The good news? They are planning to open up a full-time brick and mortar location in the spring. They’re also hosting a 6-course Japanese Inspired Tasting Menu at the Starlight Motor Inn (North Charleston). Tickets are selling fast, but there are still some available on their website, linked here.

📰 Local Updates You Should Care About

🏛️ The 2026 legislative session kicks off this week, resuming right where it left off last year. It’s also an an election year for every member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. The primary topics in the 2026 agenda are Affordability and Accessibility of Dependent Care, SCDOT Modernization, Building Competitive Communities, Military, Housing, and Insurance. You can check out the full agenda here.

🔥 SC Forestry officials issue Red Flag Fire Alert for 33 counties (live5news). The alert is effective as of 1/11, at 6am in response to the elevated risk of wildfires because of a lack of significant rainfall. This does not prohibit outdoor burning, but it is strongly encouraged to halt any burning until the alert is lifted.

🏫 The former Marion S. Hanckel Kindergarten at 34 Pitt St. is now listed for sale, following an extended legal case that resulted from a Charleston man’s attempt to buy the property in 2013. Check out the full news article (The Post and Courier). I’m interested to see what a buyer will do with the building, but in all likelihood, it’ll probably turn into more apartments.

City Leaders are considering what to do with the historic former gas station, that most recently housed the closed restaurant, Fuel. The current proposal is to move the historic portions of the building to the corner of the lot it’s on, demolish the new additions to the building, and then make room for development of residential and commercial space. Why this matters: Charleston is a historic town, but also incredibly fast growing. There will be continuous battles over growth vs. preservation. Check out a full breakdown here (live5news).

🌳 New Awendaw Mayor, Chris Crolley, says one of his great responsibilities is preserving the rural character of Awendaw. There has been a previously approved development on the town’s White Tract that may have 200 homes, each with its own septic tank. The Supreme Court on December 18th paused the development, but that’s only a temporary hold. Crolley is fighting against the planned community, along with development of septic systems in Awendaw. You can see the full article linked here (City Paper).
