New in Town

🐟 Cheeky is coming to Meeting Street. The forthcoming restaurant is the latest from The Neighborhood Dining Group, behind Husk, Delaney Oyster House, Marbled & Fin, Minero, and The James. Cheeky is billed as a seafood-forward concept inspired by global coastlines, pairing varied seafood preparations with a beverage program built around cocktails, crisp and sparkling wines, and premium pours. The 5,300-square-foot space will feature a large indoor dining room with an expansive bar, open-air windows, and an exterior patio looking out over Meeting Street. Full menus and team details are still to come, with the doors expected to open in fall 2026.

🥐 TOUS les JOURS is bringing its French-Asian bakery cafe to Carnes Crossroads in Summerville. The brand is setting up at N Main Street. If you haven’t heard of it before, it’s is an international bakery chain with more than 100 locations, known for blending French baking techniques with Asian cafe culture. The menu runs deep, with croissants, pastries, sweet and savory buns, donuts, and fresh-baked breads alongside a case of buttercream, cloud, and mousse cakes. On the drink side, expect espresso drinks, specialty lattes, teas, and smoothies. No firm opening date has been announced yet, but the Summerville location is listed as coming soon. Check out their menu here.

🌯 Portside Galley is coming to Meeting Street downtown. The new shop brings a coastal-inspired, build-your-own burrito concept to the peninsula, focused on customizable breakfast and lunch burritos with fresh ingredients, proteins, eggs, and housemade toppings, plus coffee, juices, and grab-and-go options. The nautical name fits the idea: "Portside" for the harbor-side inspiration and "Galley" as a nod to a ship's kitchen, small and efficient and built around doing a few things well. No official opening date yet, but the team is promoting a spring 2026 debut. Check out their Instagram.

📰Local Updates You Should Care About

🏫 Charleston schools are boosting starting teacher salaries to $67,500 in the new budget, marking a significant investment in educator compensation. The raise puts Charleston among the more competitive districts in the state for attracting teaching talent. For families with kids in Charleston County schools, this could mean better teacher retention and quality instruction as the district works to fill classroom vacancies.

🏘️ Charleston will buy or condemn West Ashley marshland to help a Holiday Inn developer move forward with their project. The city is using eminent domain powers to acquire the wetland property, which has been a sticking point in the development process. This decision could set a precedent for how the city handles future development conflicts involving environmentally sensitive land.

✈️ Charleston International Airport scored a brand new air traffic control facility as one of just eight airports selected nationally for the upgrade. The state-of-the-art facility is part of a major U.S. Department of Transportation investment in aviation infrastructure. For travelers, this means improved flight safety and potentially better on-time performance as the airport handles growing passenger volume.

🏠 A North Charleston mobile home park was sold to a developer, forcing residents to scramble for new housing. Families living in the park are facing tight deadlines to relocate as the new owner plans to redevelop the property. This displacement highlights the ongoing affordable housing crunch in the Charleston area, where low-income residents have fewer and fewer options as land values soar.

🚌 The Beach Reach Shuttle returns to Isle of Palms starting Friday, offering free rides between Mount Pleasant Towne Centre and the beach. The seasonal shuttle service helps reduce traffic congestion and parking headaches during the busy summer months. If you're planning beach trips this summer, the free shuttle could save you both money and the hassle of finding parking on the island.

That's everything for this Friday. Enjoy the weekend, Charleston. We'll be back in your inbox next week.
