Local Updates You Should Care About

☕Coffee + Walk
For my fellow Charlestonians who love starting the day with a fresh brew and a scenic walk, this one’s for you. Take it as your reminder to enjoy the beauty of where we live while supporting a local coffee shop along the way.
Sorelle Mercato + The Battery
Sorelle Mercato is located right on Broad Street in historic downtown Charleston, making it an ideal starting point for a morning stroll. Their weekly coffee special rotates, but the chocolate chip cookie latte has quickly become a local favorite. They also offer flavored LaMill teas, and if you want something different, try the Matcha Green Tea Latte. Once you’ve grabbed your drink, head south on Meeting Street toward The Battery for iconic harbor views. Or walk east on Broad Street to Waterfront Park and continue on to Rainbow Row for one of the most picturesque stretches in the city.
The Archive + Ion
The Archive, voted Best Bookstore in South Carolina for 2025, has a curated mix of books, coffee, and wine. Their February coffee specials are worth a stop, and the Chocolate Chip Pancake Latte is my personal favorite. Grab a book and your drink, then step outside into the heart of I'On. It’s one of the most walkable neighborhoods in the Charleston area, filled with charming local shops, scenic waterways, and beautiful Lowcountry architecture. The lakes and canals give it a picturesque feel that’s reminiscent of Venice, making it the perfect setting for a relaxed afternoon stroll.

📰Local Updates You Should Care About
🍔After just one year in operation, Sean Brock’s latest Charleston concept, Joyland, located at 145 Calhoun Street, has closed. For those unfamiliar, Sean Brock previously led several of Charleston’s most acclaimed restaurants, including McCrady’s, Husk, and Minero. Joyland marked a departure from those fine dining roots, leaning into a late-night, fast-casual format. I visited once and left underwhelmed. Despite the fast-food positioning, I waited more than 45 minutes for a chicken skewer that didn’t meet expectations. Judging by similar feedback from other locals, that experience wasn’t unique, which likely contributed to the closure. It will be interesting to see what concept moves into the space next. The Calhoun Street location has seen multiple restaurant turnovers over the years, and it remains to be seen what will finally stick.
🏠South Carolina Senate Bill 768, which just passed the Senate 44-0, would significantly expand the homestead exemption for homeowners age 65+. Current law provides a $50,000 exemption after one year of residency, but the proposed bill would increase that to $75,000 after five years and $150,000 after ten years. The bill now heads to the House and, if approved and signed by the governor, would take effect for 2026 taxes. With rising home values driving up assessments, this could provide meaningful relief for longtime Charleston homeowners.
🚲The Drop In is a hybrid movement studio in Charleston’s North Central neighborhood that officially opened Saturday at 1118 King Street. Blending rhythm-based cycling, somatic mat work, and dance, it offers an immersive mind-body experience designed as an intentional alternative to traditional gyms. Focused on strength, emotional release, and community, The Drop In creates a transformative and inclusive space for movement. Founder memberships are still available at a discounted rate.
🥖Paris Baguette, the South Korean bakery-café brand known for its French-inspired pastries, artisan breads, decorated cakes, sandwiches, and espresso drinks, has officially opened in Belle Hall in Mount Pleasant. The concept blends European baking tradition with a neighborhood coffee shop feel. Guests grab a tray and tongs upon entering, select from items like mochi donuts, quiches, pizzettas, and stuffed croissants, then head to the counter to pay and order their coffee. You can check out the full menu here.

That’s everything I’ve got for this week. Thanks for being part of this community and showing up for local spots around Charleston.
Don’t forget to keep an eye out for Friday’s edition.
