Good morning, and welcome back to All Things Charleston.
I hope everyone stayed warm this weekend - it was definitely one of the colder ones we’ve had in a while. As we head into Monday, consider this your weekly reset and a chance to start strong.
My goal with this newsletter is simple: save you time, keep you updated on what matters locally, and highlight the events and openings worth your attention.
If you own a local business and are interested in showcasing it to the community, click here and we can discuss partnership opportunities.

Just Opened / New in Town
☕Carolus Coffee (Hutchinson Square, Summerville)
If you’re near Hutchinson Square in Summerville and see a man in a wide-brim hat posted up next to a vintage VW coffee van, you’re in the right spot. Carolus Coffee is a brand-new mobile coffee shop run by a one-man crew, and locals are already raving about the coffee and the genuinely friendly service. Find it at 200 W Richardson Ave (in front of Laura Jones & Co.). Including their Instagram here.
🥟Bareo Charleston (Downtown, Charleston)
This shop isn’t open yet, but it will be at the start of February. Bareo is the sister restaurant of Kultura, which is a Filipino restaurant from James Beard nominated chef, Nikko Cagalanan. You can expect bold flavors, handcrafted dumplings, and dumpling soups. The location will be at 73 Spring St, Downtown, Charleston. They’ve already done a few pop ups, which I’ll link here for a preview of the dishes they’ll be serving.
🥖 Giannone - Eatery & Italian Market
Giannone is a brand-new Italian market and eatery specializing in fresh focaccia, made-to-order Italian sandwiches, and baked goods - plus biscuits in the morning. If you appreciate high-quality ingredients, fresh bread, and authentic Italian flavors, this is your spot. They’re located in Mount Pleasant next to Vintage Coffee Café and Coastal Crust. Check out their full menu and offerings on their website.

📰 Local Updates You Should Care About
🚧 Road Closures Scheduled Ahead of 2026 MLK Parade. The 54th annual MLK Parade is this Monday, January 19 in downtown Charleston. Setup begins at 6:00 a.m. near Burke High School, with Fishburne Street near Hagood Avenue closing early. The parade starts at 10:00 a.m., runs through the downtown route, and roads are expected to reopen by 1:00 p.m.
💰 S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster released his final, $16 billion executive budget, recommending more income tax cuts, higher teacher pay and major investments in roads and 4-year-old kindergarten - issues he’s focused on during his decade in the state’s highest office (City Paper).
🍴 Eater just released the 14 best new restaurants in Charleston, along with a heatmap so you can easily track location. The issue features many of my favorite spots, such as Ok Donna, Kultura, and Shokudo. Take a look here for the full list.
🏢 The town of Mount Pleasant is considering a proposed ordinance that would change building regulations for landowners in Old Mount Pleasant. The regulations would apply only to future construction. The maximum height limit would remain 25 feet, but any portion of a structure exceeding 18 feet would be required to step back 10 feet (absnews4). Why this matters: a theme we’ve been harping on, expansion vs. preservation. Homeowners want to protect their privacy and the feel of their neighborhood, while developers want to cash in on the growth of Charleston.
🍗 Delish, a national food publication, has listed Charleston Wine + Food Festival on its calendar for top food events in the US (linked here). The rest of the country is finally taking Charleston seriously when it comes to food! We’ll do a full segment on an upcoming newsletter to let you know if the Wine + Food festival is worth your time and money.
