✨New in Town
🍣Bareo, a Japanese and Filipino restaurant from James Beard Award finalist Chef Nikko Cagalanan, is opening today at 73 Spring Street in downtown Charleston. The restaurant will be open daily from 12-10 pm and will feature steamed dumplings with locally sourced seasonal fillings, dumpling noodle soup, handrolls, and a rotating bento-style share plate. If you want to go make sure to look at reservations as it will likely be packed for the next few weeks.
🥩The Lick opened this past weekend at 10 Windermere Boulevard in South Windermere Center, taking over the former YoBo Cantina space. The menu focuses on high-end Wagyu and wet-aged steaks, alongside steakhouse staples like short rib, The Lick Burger, and a classic French dip. It offers an elevated date night option without having to head downtown. Early word from Charleston locals has been strong. That matters in a market where high-end concepts are scrutinized quickly. 🍺The team behind Freehouse Brewery has officially purchased the property that housed Rod & Gun on Savannah Highway for $2.73M. It was previously under contract with Parker’s Kitchen, but that deal fell through, and now the plan is to transform the site into a brewpub and coffee shop. It’s also noted that the Charleston Bicycle Co. will remain, continuing it’s 30+ years in operation (The Post and Courier).
🏠The City of Charleston has launched its new Project 3500 Affordable Housing Dashboard, giving residents a clearer view into how the city plans to deliver 3,500 net new affordable housing units by 2032. Why this matters: It’s a meaningful step toward transparency. Residents can now track progress in real time and better hold elected officials accountable. You can explore the dashboard here.
🌳Lowcountry Land Trust has received a $1 million donation from Boeing to help develop the 44-acre Angel Oak Preserve surrounding the iconic Angel Oak Tree. The funding will support trails, educational features, and protected green space designed to balance public access with long-term conservation. As development continues across the Lowcountry, this is a meaningful investment in preserving one of Charleston’s most recognizable landmarks and the land around it (News2).
🐉Lunar New Year is being celebrated in Charleston on Feb. 14 with the second annual Year of the Horse festival hosted by the Charleston AAPI Collective. The event runs from 1-4 pm at Storehouse 9 in the Navy Yard and will feature local vendors, food, music, lion dancing, and activities for kids. A separate panel discussion focused on Asian food and culture will take place the following day. The festival is free and open to the public (City Paper).
