New in Town

🍝V Modern Italian opened yesterday at 465 Meeting Street in the Greystar Building where The Select once stood. The concept comes from a Madrid and Stockholm-based hospitality group expanding from Nashville, and the menu is built around house-made pastas, hand-crafted pizzas, and wood-fired dishes developed with Michelin-starred chef Stefano Ciotti. The name is a nod to the Roman numeral five, reflecting their goal of engaging all five senses. Open for dinner daily and brunch on weekends. Check out their menu here.

🌿 Bloom & Bean Flower Cafe opens this morning at 7am at Oyster Park in Mount Pleasant, bringing a coffee shop, plant shop, and snack cafe all under one roof. Think specialty coffee, fresh pastries, and a space filled with plants and dreamy decor that makes you want to stay a while. Check out their Instagram to see the coffee, food, and gorgeous interior that they’ve built out.

🎸 Lou Lou's Tavern on the Tracks is opening this spring at The Refinery on Meeting Street Road. From Dave and Chrissy Lorenz of Epic Hospitality (the folks behind Mex 1 and Islander 71), Lou Lou's is a music-driven tavern with a small plate menu built around seafood, burgers, and shareable bites. The concept is designed to pair with The Refinery's live music lineup, so you can book a dinner table, catch a show, and come back for cocktails without leaving the venue. Named after Chrissy's sister and the couple's hound dog. Check out their website here.

🍪 Insomnia Cookies is opening on University Boulevard near Charleston Southern University with a grand opening celebration this Saturday, April 11. If you sign up for their rewards program, you'll get a free classic cookie. Late-night cookie delivery is about to get a lot easier for that side of town.

📰Local Updates You Should Care About

🏗️ A 300-unit apartment building at 295 Calhoun Street with ground-level retail space just passed preliminary approval, marking another major development project moving forward in the Charleston area. The mixed-use project would add significant housing inventory to the region, which has been facing a well-documented shortage of residential units. Ground-floor retail could also bring new shopping and dining options to whatever neighborhood hosts this development.

💰 Charleston is trying to recover over $300,000 after having to demolish a rotting building on King Street, highlighting the costs taxpayers bear when property owners let buildings deteriorate. The city had to step in and tear down the structure, but now faces the challenge of recouping those demolition expenses. This case underscores ongoing debates about property maintenance standards and who pays when buildings become public safety hazards.

🛒 A new neighborhood grocery store is opening to serve a long-standing food desert in North Charleston, promising affordable options for residents who have struggled with limited access to fresh groceries. Food deserts have been a persistent challenge in parts of the tri-county area, forcing some residents to travel long distances for basic necessities. This store could significantly improve daily life for families in the area who currently lack convenient, affordable grocery access.

That's everything for this Friday. Enjoy the weekend, Charleston. We'll be back in your inbox Monday morning.
