Local Updates You Should Care About

⏳The Local Scoop on SEWE (Feb. 13-15)
If you’re newer to Charleston, Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) is one of those events that brings in thousands of tourists across the country. It has been around for more than four decades and takes over downtown Charleston with exhibits at Marion Square, Brittlebank Park, and nearby historic venues. At its core, SEWE is about wildlife conservation, using art, education, and live demonstrations to highlight the importance of protecting animals and habitats. Check out the full schedule of SEWE events here.
It’s also very family friendly. Kids love the live animal encounters, bird of prey shows, and working dog demonstrations, while adults can enjoy the art and exhibits. I’ve been a few times, and you don’t need VIP tickets to enjoy it. General Admission gives you access to the main exhibits and activities and is more than enough for a great visit.
General Admission tickets run about $40–$45 on Friday or Saturday, $35–$40 on Sunday, or $85–$95 for a three-day pass. Kids 10 and under are free with a ticketed adult, and GA gets you access to all the main exhibits, live animal and dog demonstrations, and family-friendly activities across downtown. Unfortunately, tickets online are sold out, but you can still purchase tickets in-person at the locations linked here.

📰Local Updates You Should Care About
If you felt the ground move Saturday night, you’re not imagining it. That was an earthquake, and it ended up being the strongest recorded in South Carolina so far this year. Experts say it’s part of ongoing seismic activity in the Lowcountry, where dozens of small earthquakes have been logged since 2022, with no damage reported from this one (The State).
The iconic “Piggly Wiggly” house at 74 Murray Boulevard on the Battery has hit the market for $8.5 million, listed for the first time in nearly 30 years. The historic waterfront home spans about 4,784 square feet with four bedrooms and five bathrooms, commanding sweeping views of the Ashley River and Charleston Harbor. Check out the official listing with pictures here.
The City of Charleston is suing property owners on Johns Island after trash and construction debris covering about 10,000 square feet was illegally dumped on city-owned land, delaying a drainage project. The city says cleanup cost more than $140,000 and is seeking to recover those expenses and prevent future dumping (WCSC).
A proposed THC ban in South Carolina stalled after rare bipartisan pushback in the House. Lawmakers debated two bills, one that would ban all THC products statewide and another that would partially ban THC edibles while limiting low-dose THC drinks to liquor stores. Critics warned the measures could cost jobs and hurt a fast-growing industry, arguing regulation would be more effective than an outright ban (City Paper).

That’s everything I’ve got for this week. Thanks for being part of this community and showing up for local spots around Charleston.
Don’t forget to keep an eye out for Friday’s edition.
