New in Town / Opening Soon

🍝V Modern Italian is coming to 465 Meeting St. this spring, taking over the former home of The Select. The Stockholm- and Madrid-based Fast Fine Restaurant Group brings its second U.S. location to Charleston after debuting in Nashville last year. The menu, developed with Michelin-starred Chef Stefano Ciotti, features antipasti, fresh-made pastas, and wood-fired dishes with a modern spin on Italian classics. The restaurant is also known for a signature nightly moment where servers dim the lights and parade through the dining room twirling towels to the beat of the music, a theatrical nod to Italian convivialità, the spirit of communal celebration at the table. Check out their Instagram to get a sense of the vibe.

The Washington Cafe just opened in Mt. Pleasant (1111 McKnight Road), founded by Cainhoy native Peter Washington III who returned home to build the community coffee shop he'd always wanted. The menu features Counter Culture Coffee alongside Gullah-Geechee-inspired baked goods including Charleston chewies, handmade biscuits, and his mother's sweet potato pie. Local art lines the walls, family photos from five generations of the Washington family hang in a gallery display, and DJs pop up on weekends. Learn more about the cafe on their Instagram.

📰Local Updates You Should Care About

🥂South Carolina lawmakers are considering a bill that could allow liquor stores to open on Sundays for the first time. The proposal would let cities and counties hold a local vote to permit Sunday liquor sales, typically between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Right now, liquor stores in South Carolina must stay closed on Sundays, even though restaurants and bars can still serve alcohol.

🏠Planning is continuing to advance for Long Savanna, a massive master-planned community proposed off Bear Swamp Road in West Ashley. The project recently went through another review by Charleston’s Technical Review Committee as city staff and residents weigh issues like traffic, safety, and environmental impacts. If built out, Long Savanna could include thousands of homes along with commercial space and neighborhood amenities as part of one of the largest development projects in Charleston’s history.

🏬A new retail development called Carolina Avenue Commercial Village is planned for a busy intersection in Goose Creek near Goose Creek Boulevard, St. James Avenue, and Red Bank Road. The project will include three new buildings totaling about 35,000 square feet designed for a mix of retail, office, and flex commercial space. Construction is expected to be completed in phases between April and October 2026, with leasing already underway for future tenants. Why it matters: As Goose Creek continues to grow, projects like this aim to add more local retail and service businesses to support the rapidly expanding population in Berkeley County.

💎Hidden Gems

🥙Located inside Tanger Outlets Charleston, Istanbul Shish Kabob is an under-the-radar Turkish spot is a great option if you’re near the outlets or airport. When you sit down, you’re greeted with a basket of warm pita along with garlic sauce, olives, and a small salad for dipping. Plates come loaded with kebabs, rice, and sides, and portions are generous. You can get a $16.99 plate that’s easily enough for two meals, making it one of the better value spots around Charleston. The service is known for being warm too, with staff sometimes bringing out a small sweet treat like rolled baklava if you’re celebrating something. Check out their menu here.

🧅Located in West Ashley, Glass Onion is a longtime local favorite known for seasonal Southern comfort food made with locally sourced ingredients. The menu changes often depending on what’s fresh, but you’ll usually find dishes like fried chicken, shrimp and grits, and Lowcountry seafood specials. It’s not flashy and sits in a simple roadside spot, but many locals consider it one of the most consistently good Southern restaurants in the Charleston area. Check out their menu here.

That’s everything I’ve got for this weekend. Thanks for being part of this community and showing up for local spots around Charleston.
